Paul Auster was born in
1947, attended Columbia University and got a Master's degree; he dropped
out before he got his Ph.D. It is rumored that after he dropped out he
did several things, from working on an oil tanker to producing B movies
in France. He actually did live in France for a while, and has
translated several French works.
Early in his literary career, he was known as a poet, and had several of his poems published in various literary journals. He also wrote several essays and conducted interviews with literary figures during this time. He is better known for his novels, such as City of Glass, the first novel in his New York Trilogy, and more recently, Timbuktu. He has also become known for the his work in film, including Blue in the Face, Smoke, and The Music of Chance from the novel of the same name. |

Mary Oliver, born 1935 in Cleveland, Ohio, is the author of eight books of poems, including American Primitive (which received the Pulitzer Prize for 1983); House of Light (winner of the Christopher and L.L. Winship Awards); New and Selected Poems (winner of the National Book Award), White Pine, and West Wind; two chapbooks, The Night Traveller and Sleeping in the Forest; prose books, Winter Hours, and Blue Pastures; and books on craft, Rules for the Dance: A Handbook for Writing and Reading Metrical Verse. She spent one year at Ohio State University and a second year at Vassar. Though she never graduated from college, she has been awarded many awards and honors.
