Featured Sites

In the spirit of the season, I thought it would be nice to list some sites on the Internet where we can make charitable donations. Sites can be put into three categories: Click-to-Donate sites, Charity Malls, and sites where you can Donate Your Time.

Click-to-Donate

Some of the most popular click-to-donate sites are The Hunger Site, The Rainforest Site, The Kids AIDS Site, The Breast Cancer Site, The Child Survival Site, and The Landmine Site. All these sites are operated by GreaterGood.com.

Two other click-to-donate sites:

ForMyCause.com has developed a free computer application called MyBar that you can download and install on your computer. MyBar blends the productivity and recreation of Web surfing with the genuine desire to make a positive difference in our society--no matter what your budget. Contributions to your favorite causes are limitless, yet you never pay a cent.

eGenerosity.com gives you the option of being generous every time you are online. Before you shop online, search the Web, or send email, first choose the school or charity you wish to have benefit from your generosity. Select a nonprofit from the drop down list or search a national database of more than 640,000 charities and 189,000 schools. This initial step is required only the first time you visit eGenerosity.com. Register to receive your free eGenerosity.com email account--The Email That Gives, or if you wish to support an organization that has not yet activated an account with them. There is no extra cost to you and all eGenerosity.com services are free to participating organizations.

Charity Malls

iGive.com gives your cause the full percentage of the purchase price (minus tax, shipping, and handling) shown by their merchant member in the Mall at iGive.com. iGive.com is paid a sales commission (over and above the charitable contribution percentage) when members make purchases. Many merchants pay them to advertise on our Web site. Go to their FAQ to learn more.

CharityMall.com has over 200 top e-retail members and every order you place will send money to your chosen charity, at no additional cost to you. E-retailers pay a commission for every purchase made through CharityMall.com. They send 100 percent of that commission to your chosen charity.

At Care2.com you can shop at your favorite stores and generate donations to help the environment. The stores pay Care2.com only if you use the listed links each time you shop. Care2 donates 10 percent of their revenues to environmental non-profits.

Donate Your Time

If you would like to make a difference in your community, you can volunteer online. Some sites where you can find local organizations to donate your time are:

DoSomething.org, a nationwide network of young people who know they can make a difference and take action to change the world around them.
CommunityService.com, where organizations and volunteers come together to help make a better community and a better world.
Helping.org, where you can find a volunteer opportunity that's right for you by entering your ZIP Code to search the volunteer database.
VolunteerAmerica.net, which is dedicated to connecting individuals with volunteer opportunities on public lands. They list opportunities by agencies, such as the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, and State parks.
VolunteerMatch.org, which uses the power of the Internet to help individuals nationwide find volunteer opportunities posted by local nonprofit and public sector organizations.
